One More Star in the Galaxy

What is it about this guy?
[nypost.com]
I'm not much of a soccer, er... football fan. I was regularly rendered speechless by the golden gods of my high school soccer team. I managed to catch the Ghana/Germany upset (on accident: I was at a French/North African restaurant, which I don't recommend, at the time) in the last World Cup. And I saw Zidane head-butt Materazzi on live TV in the final match. But that's about all I can claim.

I do so, however, like to look at David Beckham. So I was very pleased indeed to catch a glimpse of the New York Post this afternoon with his picture on the cover. For once, I didn't turn away from the tabloid with a feeling of nausea. It took a Web search to remind me that the image was originally published in Vanity Fair.

On a side note, I think it's interesting that coverage of his imminent move from Real Madrid to the Los Angeles Galaxy has centered on how much money he's going to make and the degree to which he and Victoria are going to be the new Hollywood glam couple du jour rather than the state of soccer in the United States or how his introduction might raise the profile of the sport to its benefit. The Post did responsibly report early in its story, however, that the selfless Becks wants to, as he says, "make a difference with the kids."

Hey — whatever gets you through training, I guess.
